Young Journalist of the Year Contest

Young Journalist of the Year

The “The Young Journalist of the Year” Contest is an initiative of Freedom House, Edipresse AS Romania and Vodafone Romania. This contest, unique in the Romanian press, emerged in 1998 from the desire of promoting young talented journalists.

Over the years were added new sections as: culture, social issues, economics, business, financial/banking, media/advertising, health and IT/telecommunications and were attracted new sponsors.

The whole project and its entire history reflects the hard work of the project team. Every year, same jury, same media partners and sponsors support this project because they share together a common goal: a better press in a better society.

Beyond human and professional resources invested in this competition over the years, the financial component should not be neglected: about 300,000 euros.

Over 100 journalists took part on this contest over the years. The selection was made on the basis of the articles sent by the participants at the contest by a jury composed of three media personalities for each section.

Freedom House Romania is an independent nongovernmental organization that supports the expansion of freedom in the world.

Freedom is possible only in democratic political systems in which the governments are accountable to their own people; the rule of law prevails; and freedoms of expression, association, and belief, as well as respect for the rights of minorities and women, are guaranteed.

Freedom ultimately depends on the actions of committed and courageous men and women. We support nonviolent civic initiatives in societies where freedom is denied or under threat and we stand in opposition to ideas and forces that challenge the right of all people to be free. Freedom House Romania functions as a catalyst for freedom, democracy and the rule of law through its analysis, advocacy and action.
